Teaching

Sami Souissi is actively involved in the  education, mentorship and supervision of Bachelor, Master and PhD students. He is used to teach and supervise students with different backgrounds: biology, ecology, ecotoxicology, chemistry, physics and computer science.
He is involved in the teaching programs of 3 Masters among the European BioRef Master.
He is focussing on blue economy with marine biomass valorisation at industrial scale.
He also supervise group of students to prepare research and industrial projects related to the biorefinery techniques and advancement in the field of marine biomass (i.e., plankton biomass, micro-alhgae and seaweeds).

Below some brief examples of the main lectures and teaching modules given by Sami Souissi:

– During the first year of the Master program entitled: Biodiversity, Ecology and Evolution (BEE)
The main teaching courses are:
* SAMpling Methods and Modelling of Ecosystems: SAM3E
This fundamental course in ecology created by Sami Souissi in 2002 and has been improved during 2 decades is described in details here.
* Marine Ecotoxicology
→ Introduction to marine ecotoxicology and their specific tools.
Providing examples of the complexity of studying the effects of pollutants (i.e., Persistant Ornagic Pollutants and Trace Metals) in estuarine ecosystems. Showing the link between disciplines such as ecology, chemistry, physics, genetics and toxicology to enrich the field of aquatic ecotoxicology.
Another aspect of the course is based on coaching a group of students to study two topics based on the i) methods of identification of microplastics (MPs) in oceans and ii) the effects of MPs on marine organisms and food-webs. The students present their research projects in front of a jury composed of 4 members representing the 4 topics adressed of the effects of pollution in air, sol, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
* Biological oceanography: zooplankton ecology
→ Feeding ecology of zooplankton (i.e., copepods)
→ Population dynamics and life cycle characteristics of copepods
→ Theoretical lectures and practical classes by manipulating copepods and developping small scale research projects during a practiocal training
During the second year of the same Master Sami Souissi is involved in two different specialities
⇒ Master 2 Functionning and Management of Marine Ecosystems (FOGEM)
He is involved in the following teaching modules:
→ Coupling between biological and physical processes in oceanography
Ecophysiology and adaptation of marine organisms
→ Scientific communication
→ Data analysis and modelling
→ Multivariate mapping and the GIS (Geographical Information Systems)
→ Impact of Climate Change on Aquatic Systems
⇒ Master 2 Ecology and Restauration of Degraded  Environments (ECOREMID)
→ Integrated approach in aquatic ecotoxicology

⇒ Master 2 BioRefeniry and EUropean Master in the Chemistry department (BioRef)
→ Biomass production in marine plankton: from ecosystem functionning to industrial applications

→ Mini-projects: coaching group of students to perform research on the industrial applications of marine biomass (i.e., extraction of pigment, lipids, proteins etc for several industrial applications)
